Dreamfest-COMMUNITY & THE DREAM: Racial Taboo, a film by Brian Grimm (Cary Arts Center-Cary)

Join the Town of Cary in recognizing and celebrating the life, work and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during Dreamfest, a three-day event featuring music, film, and service to the community beginning January 11. The highlight of this year’s celebration is the world premiere of We Shall Overcome, a special composition created especially for Cary’s 2018 event by jazz composer Harold Mims and performed with the Triangle Youth Jazz Band. The concert, which also includes songs led by youth participants, will take place on January 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Cary Arts Center, 101 Dry Ave. The event is free but tickets are required.

The full lineup features the following programs, which are free (unless otherwise noted) and open to all:

THE DREAM REVISITED: Civil Rights in Perspective
Thursday, January 11 | 7 p.m. | The Cary Theater | Free; Tickets Required
Inspired by the vision of Martin Luther King Jr., the filmmakers, after establishing a historical context with archival footage and imagery, interview some of today’s opinion leaders, community organizers and other citizens to investigate how much progress has been made while using Martin Luther King’s vision as a moral reference.



SONGS OF THE DREAM: Kids Sing & Learn
Saturday, January 13 | 10 a.m. | Cary Arts Center | Free
Learn the songs that animated the struggle for equality in this family-friendly singalong. And enjoy hands-on arts & craft activities that illustrate this moment in history. Kids may be invited to showcase the songs at the evening cultural performance.

Racial Taboo is a documentary that looks at our history using candid interviews and comedy. Following the film, enjoy snacks, participate in group discussions, and debrief with film producer Brian Grimm. Hosted by Racial Harmony, a local group forming friendships to learn and grow together.

 

MUSIC & THE DREAM: We Shall Overcome

The exciting world premiere of Jazz Composer Harold Mims' We Shall Overcome, created especially for the 2018 MLK, Jr. Dreamfest. Also enjoy songs led by Songs of the Dream participants and other youth voices.

 

JUSTICE & THE DREAM: 13th, a film by Ava DuVernay
Sunday, January 14 | 3 p.m. | The Cary Theater | Free; Tickets Required
Following the film, enjoy a discussion with featured guest NC State faculty member Dr. Thomas Easley, a recognized authority on mass incarceration.

 

SERVICE & THE DREAM: MLK Day of Service
Monday, January 15 | Good Hope Farm, 1580 Morrisville Carpenter Road
Shift A | 10 a.m.-noon
Shift B | 2–4 p.m.
Take time to give back to your community by helping prepare the soil of our new 20-acre urban agriculture and historic site. Be prepared to get dirty! Coordinated by the Town of Cary Spruce program. Volunteers age 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
