Summer may be winding down, but there’s still adventure to be had in Cary! Blue Diamond Gemstone Panning is a family-run business that prides itself on providing their guests with the wonder and fun of geological discoveries. Families will feel like they are immersed in a real treasure hunt, as they search for gems and fossils among natural stone sculptures, bamboo, and trees. Never been gemstone panning? It’s a true treat for all ages! Guests choose a bag based on the type of treasure they want to find: gems, shells, arrowheads, fossils, etc. Bags and buckets come in a variety of sizes too. Once you have your bag or bucket, you will head to the covered, outdoor sluice to literally shift through dirt for some fun finds that are all yours to keep. Staff is on hand to help and walk new “archeologists” through the process, and to help you identify your treasures.
Blue Diamond has revamped their procedures to still give their guests a cool experience, all while being as safe as possible. Guests can go to their website ahead of time and reserve a slot for panning. This allows for staff to appropriately space out guests at the sluice. Time slots are organized so that Blue Diamond has a 30 minute time block in between guests to clean and disinfect all surfaces. When you book a time, you pay a $5.00 fee for each person who is in your family, but that total is deducted from your bag purchase.
Your family will be blown away by the treasures you will find and take home! My daughter has found a variety of shells we have never seen on the beach, as well as small gems of all colors. It is super helpful to review the different types bags listed on the website prior to your visit. Each includes the price and a short description of what you will find panning. Hoping for some shark teeth or amber? Try the small fossil bag. Looking for jasper or quartz? There are several sized gem bags. Guests can even purchase geodes (in different sizes) and break them open in the geode machine.
